Symphonic Nights
The New York Philharmonic kicked off its 164th
season with a gala concert and dinner at Avery
Fisher Hall, attended by 960 guests. Maestro Lorin
Maazel led the orchestra in a program of Beethoven
and Richard Strauss, featuring a performance by
pianist Evgeny Kissin.
Washington, DC's National Symphony Orchestra
began its landmark 75th year by featuring violinist
Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Emanuel
Ax in Beethoven's Triple Concerto.
Conducting was music director Leonard Slatkin.
After the concert, guests continued the celebration
at a ball held on the South Plaza of the Kennedy
Center, where longtime Symphony supporters Roger
and Vicki Sant announced a donation of $10 million
to the NSO, the largest single gift in its history.
