The Los Angeles Opera began its 20th year with a gala performance of a new production of Offenbach's operetta The Grand Duchess, starring Frederica von Stade and directed by celebrated film director Garry Marshall in his operatic debut. Nearly 600 guests enjoyed the black-tie evening – at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, then at the Music Center Plaza for a post-performance gala dinner.

The San Francisco Symphony kicked off its 94th season with an opening-night gala that also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Davies Symphony Hall. The orchestra, led by conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, was joined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma in a program of Russian classics.
