She began her career in the private sector, working as an investment banker, first for Smith Barney, Harris Upham, then Lehman Brothers, Kuhn Loeb, then as a Senior Vice President at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. She went on to become a founding partner of M. R. Beal & Company, a boutique investment banking firm which specializes in municipal finance.
