Background:
Kyle MacLachlan is an actor who has brought indelible charm and a quirky sophistication to some of film and television's most memorable roles.
He is back for the 5th season on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, playing Dr. Orson Hodge, a charming dentist with a hidden agenda. During his break from the show, Kyle traveled to Australia to work on Bruce Beresford's film, MAO'S LAST DANCER which will be released early next year. Based on a true story, he portrayed Charles Foster, the immigration attorney responsible for keeping Li Cunxin(the title character)from being forcibly removed from the US by the Chinese government while helping him gain his citizenship.
A week after he returned home from Australia, he was back in front of the camera working with Michael and Mark Polish on their latest film, MANURE. Playing Jimmy Saint James, the unscrupulous head of a giant manure company, the film also stars Billy Bob Thornton and Tea Leoni as rivals to Jimmy, in the great manure wars of 1962.
Most recently he can be seen on the big screen in SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2 as Bill Kerr, a rather 'flamboyant' director of a summer theater program.
To this day, MacLachlan is probably best known for his performance as FBI Agent 'Dale Cooper' in David Lynch's ground breaking series TWIN PEAKS, for which he received two Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe Award. MacLachlan also starred for two seasons on HBO's highly successful comedy series SEX AND THE CITY, as Charlotte's 'ideal man,' Dr. Trey MacDougal.
Other recent television work includes the ABC series IN JUSTICE, playing David Swain the enigmatic head of an investigation agency specializing in solving cases of the wrongly convicted, and for the Hallmark Channel, in an adaptation of Jules Verne's classic MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. The film also starred Patrick Stewart and Gabrielle Anwar and was filmed in Thailand, completed just one week before the tsunami hit!
Kyle was also seen in the limited adventure series, THE LIBRARIAN: QUEST FOR THE SPEAR, as charming bad guy Edward Wilde. Produced by Dean Devlin for TNT and co-starring Noah Wyle and Bob Newhart.
He recently played 'the spirit of Cary Grant' in Sony Pctures Classics' TOUCH OF PINK. The New York Times praised MacLachlan's performance in this charming romantic comedy: "The real touch of class in 'Touch of Pink' ... is Kyle MacLachlan's dead-on impersonation of Cary Grant ... dropping pallid witticisms in Grant's signature staccato style with just the right accent, Mr. MacLachlan finds an easy balance between affectionate imitation and amusing parody."
In the Fall of 2003, he made his Broadway debut as 'Aston' in Harold Pinter's THE CARETAKER, starring with Patrick Stewart and Aidan Gillen. Directed by David Jones for the Roundabout Theatre Company, the play was nominated for Best Revival of a Play by the Outer Critics Circle. MacLachlan made his London stage debut in the Fall of 2002 in ON AN AVERAGE DAY on the West End, starring with Woody Harrelson. The story revolves around troubled brothers who reunite with explosive consequences. Directed by John Crowley, the play returned MacLachlan to his theater roots after a 14-year absence.
MacLachlan made his feature film debut in the futuristic drama DUNE, directed by David Lynch. This was followed by his second collaboration with Lynch in the uniquely disturbing film, BLUE VELVET.
He portrayed legendary keyboardist Ray Manzarek in THE DOORS directed by Oliver Stone and starring Val Kilmer and Meg Ryan; and starred as Josef K in Kafka's THE TRIAL, filmed entirely in Prague. The script was adapted by Harold Pinter and featured Anthony Hopkins and Jason Robards.
He starred alongside Ethan Hawke in Miramax's HAMLET (2000). Directed by Michael Almeryeda. This modernized version transplanted the Bard's setting to Manhatten with MacLachlan portraying Claudius, Hamlet's stepfather, in a cast that included Bill Murray, Julia Stiles and Sam Shepard.
MacLachlan was also featured in Mike Figgis's experimental TIMECODE, which was the first film of its kind--shot with four digital cameras simultaneously in one continuous 93-minute take. MacLachlan had previously worked with Figgis in the film ONE NIGHT STAND with Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey, Jr.
Other work includes THE TRIGGER EFFECT, co-starring Elizabeth Shue and Dermot Mulroney; THE FLINTSTONES, produced by Steven Spielberg; Paul Verhoeven's controversial but strangely satisfying cult classic, SHOWGIRLS; and Bruce Beresford's RICH IN LOVE, with Albert Finney and Jill Clayburg, produced by Richard and Lili Zanuck.
He starred opposite Samuel L. Jackson in HBO's award-winning film, AGAINST THE WALL, the story of the 1971 Attica prison riots, which was directed by the late John Frankenheimer, and in the Showtime original film ROSWELL, based on the infamous story of an alleged UFO sighting in 1947 near Roswell, New Mexico.
MacLachlan made his directorial debut in 1993 with an episode of the darkly comic HBO hit series, TALES FROM THE CRYPT.
