Cal-a-Vie is a fabulous retreat
where you can relax in beautiful, natural surroundings
and attain a new vitality, combining luxurious
European Spa philosophies with the California
concepts of fitness, health and nutrition. This
French Provençal spa features award-winning
cuisine by Executive Chef Jason Graham,
a program consisting of fitness, luxuriating
treatments and mind-body awareness, tailored
specifically to each guest's desires. The resort
is embellished with historical pieces and antiques
from Europe, bringing the finest touches of the
Mediterranean to California. A top-notch staff
of knowledgeable trainers, nutritionists, spa
therapists and every other conceivable expert
caters to each guest's every whim, ensuring
a truly unforgettable spa experience.
Terri and John Havens, the owners of Cal-a-Vie, are dedicated to providing the ultimate spa haven, offering guests
a peaceful and tranquil place to retreat from the world, where they can focus on health, nutrition, and
achieving a proper balance in their lives. An admitted Francophile, Terri loves
the spa's Provençal surroundings, and she has made it her personal mission to refurbish and
redecorate much of the property with treasures she and John find on their annual pilgrimages to France.
The spa offers three, four and seven night vacation packages that include gourmet spa cuisine, fitness classes, hiking, beauty and spa treatments, mind-body awareness programs, lectures on health and nutrition, accommodations, and even workout clothes - taking the worry out of packing. Furthermore, the location's climate is considered to be the best in the country.
The atmosphere is one of rustic elegance, where the vibrant and colorful natural landscape accentuates the comfortable and inviting appointments of this serene Mediterranean-style private village. The natural beauty surrounds you, enhancing your week-long experience of vigorous physical activity and rejuvenating beauty treatments. The spa's architectural and interior design were created to harmonize with the environment and achieve an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
Each of the 26 Mediterranean-style
villas featuring terra cotta roofs, wide wooden
plank doors and window boxes brimming with flowers,
has been individually decorated and luxuriously
appointed with fine linens and hand-crafted furniture.
Every window frames an appealing vista, and from
your private terrace you can enjoy breathtaking
views of the rolling, wooded hills.
Provence is evoked not only
in the landscape, but also in the décor.
Each cottage is individually decorated
with imported chintzes and floral prints in a
neutral palette with accents of color. French
antiques fill the
room, including intricately hand-carved over-sized
headboards, armoires, benches, desks, and night
tables in
light oak, dark walnut, and pine. After a day
of vigorous workouts, guests willingly sink into
the luxurious
down comforters and pillows, covered in toile,
of their king-size bed. The large, cheery bathroom
features
mirrors with carved, silver leaf frames, pewter
faucets from an antique design, and tiled floors
in a simple
mosaic pattern.
The compound has three
areas where guests can gather and mingle in between
classes and treatments.
The Morning Room is the center
for tea and "revitalizer" breaks. Pale yellow
walls, a cool sisal rug, and blue
and white antique plates welcome even those who
are not early risers. Wicker chairs with cushions
made
from Provençal fabrics invite guests to
take a mini-break during the day's activities.
The Dining Room has a
beamed cathedral ceiling, from which hangs an
antique French iron chandelier. In the corner
is an imposing
stone fireplace, with a decorative blue and gray
design painted above. Individual orchid-laden
antique tables
are set, with slip covered chairs in taupe check.
French doors at the far end of the room allow
light to stream
in, and they open onto an outdoor dining area.
The Evening Room is a cozy place
where guests can gather for "mocktails" and mini-lectures
on stress management, health, fitness, and nutrition.
NUTRITION: Upon arrival, each guest receives a wellness consultation tailored to their personal goals and desires. Proper nutrition plays an integral role in helping achieve personal fitness goals. Linda Illingworth, Cal-a-Vie's exclusive Registered Dietitian, offers individual counseling sessions to treat each guest's nutritional concerns. The nutritional philosophy that underlies Cal-a-Vie Health Spa's dietary program reflects the most contemporary understanding among health and nutrition experts: A low-fat, low-sodium diet, high in natural complex carbohydrates, including whole grains, legumes, fresh vegetables and fruits. Additionally, Cal-a-Vie recommends and provides modest amounts of lean animal proteins such as dairy, egg whites, poultry and fish, plus sparing amounts of natural cold pressed oils. This fundamental combination enhances health and longevity.
FITNESS PROGRAMS: With over 40 fitness classes of all levels, Cal-a-Vie is synonymous with weight loss, offering a comprehensive and effective fitness program, from weight training and core workouts to Zumba Latin Dance and Metabolic Testing.
The Pavilion, an 11,000 square-foot fitness center, features state-of-the-art equipment, a full Pilates studio and more. Exercise begins each morning with the choice of a rigorous hike on the trails that ribbon through the spa's tranquil hillside or a scenic golf course walk. The Ted Robinson-style course makes this probably the only destination spa in the world with a private, 18-hole golf course.

OLYMPIC-LENGTH SALINE POOL: As part of the property's latest multi-million dollar expansion, Cal-a-Vie recently introduced its Olympic-length
pool. The 250,000 gallon, four-racing-lanes wide, saline pool is used for fitness classes, lap swimming, private swimming lessons and leisure. Switching chlorine for
saline as an additive to the water allows guests to enjoy the benefits of softer skin and hair. Daily water fitness classes include deep water exercises with a flotation belt, strength training
with resistance bands, cardiovascular conditioning with leg floats, kickboards and
HydroBikes.
The pool's perimeter overflow design brings the water level with the surface of the deck, providing
a jaw-dropping illusion of a large shimmering mirror, resting on the deck. More than a million
pieces of mosaic glass line the bottom and sides of the pool. The overflow drains and 5,000 square feet
of deck are made of imported Greek limestone. Antique materials and fixtures, such as the entry
gate and lighting, are featured throughout the pool area.
With a pool cabana offering four stations for private outdoor massages, guests can enjoy a relaxing
treatment or sunbathe on one of the 20 lounge chairs and unwind. The tranquil sounds of an antique
mermaid-and-Neptune fountain plus a scrolling panoramic view of farm-dotted hills and majestic
mountains add a serene, picture-perfect experience.
SPA TREATMENTS: Developed in coordination with international health and beauty experts, Cal-a-Vie's tailored Beauty and Body program will provide the ultimate experience. Each treatment is highlighted by natural plant and sea extracts and aromatic, restorative oils.
