Approximately
$480,000 was raised to support clinical research on
autism and other serious developmental disorders in
children at the April 26 “Spirit of Achievement” Luncheon
of Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva
University.
The event at The Pierre Hotel in New York City, which
was sponsored by Einstein's National Women's
Division and attended by more than 500 supporters of
the medical school, also honored six exceptional women
who have made outstanding contributions in their fields.
Lois Pope, founder of the Lois Pope
LIFE Center and founder and president of Leaders in
Furthering Education (LIFE), was given The Lizette
H. Sarnoff Award for Volunteer Service. In addition, “Spirit
of Achievement” Awards were presented to Princess
Yasmin Aga Kahn, founder of the Rita Hayworth
Galas and a leading advocate for Alzheimer's
disease research; Alma Johnson Powell,
chair of America's Promise – The Alliance
for Youth (and wife of former Secretary of State Colin
Powell); Margaret
Russell, editor
and co-founder of Elle Decor magazine and
trustee of DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation
Fighting AIDS); Lynn Sherr, pioneering
ABC-TV news correspondent and author; and Sharon
Stone, award-winning actress and chair of
amFAR's Campaign for AIDS Research. All awards
were designed and donated by Tiffany & Co.
Felicia Taylor, a five-time Emmy
Award nominee, freelance journalist and former anchor
for NBC News, served as mistress of ceremonies.
Established in 1955, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine
of Yeshiva University is one of the premier centers for
biomedical research and education in the United States.
A pioneer in the practice of socially conscious medicine,
The College has earned “Center of Excellence” status
from the National Institutes of Health in six major biomedical
fields: brain, cancer, diabetes, AIDS, liver disease
and sickle-cell disease.
