Opening
of the Diker Pavilion for Native Arts and Cultures
Yellow Bird Indian Dancers perform at the opening
of
the Diker Pavilion for Native Arts and Cultures.
The NationalMuseum of
the American Indian in New
York, the George
Gustav Heye Center (GGHC), held
a Gala Celebration for the opening
of the Diker Pavilion for Native
Arts and Cultures on September 20.
The Diker Pavilion, named for museum patrons Charles and Valerie
Diker, will increase the museum's
public space by one-third, expanding the museum's
home at the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S.
Custom House. The new space will allow
the museum to feature more special programs
and welcome more visitors. The inaugural exhibition, “Beauty
Surrounds Us,” graces the 6,000 square-foot
elliptical space with 77 extraordinary objects
from the museum's renowned permanent
collection, illustrating the dance, music,
games and family life of Native peoples from
throughout the hemisphere.
