On
October 23, the American Skin Association (ASA) celebrated
their 20th Anniversary and the 85th birthday of the
association's founder and president George
W. Hambrick, Jr., MD with a gala at the Rainbow
Room in New York City.
Douglas R. Lowy, MD of the National
Cancer Institute received this year's Humanitarian
Award for the development of the human papilloma virus
(HPV) vaccine. Margaret L. Kripke, PhD of
the U.T. M.D. Anderson Cancer Center received the Lifetime
Achievement Award for her research on the impact of
sunlight on the immune system. Merck & Co,
Inc. received the Corporate Leadership Award
for the production of the first viral (HPV) vaccine
to prevent cancer.
Her Grace, the Duchess of Marlborough, was
this year's honorary chairman. Marianne and John
K. Castle and Abby and Howard
P. Milstein were this year's co-chairs. John
J. Connolly, Ed.D of Castle Connolly Medical,
Ltd. was the Master of Ceremonies.

The American Skin Association (ASA)
works through research and education to prevent and
treat the wide variety of skin diseases that affect
more than 100 million Americans. The non-profit
organization is led by passionate advocates and advised
by leading scientists and physicians. Since its
founding in 1987, the ASA has committed more than $5.5
million to advance research into the causes, prevention
and treatment of skin diseases, disorders and cancers.
