Women in Conservation Luncheon

Luncheon at The Plaza.
Luncheon at The Plaza.

The National Audubon Society hosted their Fifth Annual Women in Conservation Luncheon, on Tuesday, May 20 at The Plaza in New York. Sigourney Weaver was the emcee. Allison Rockefeller is Awards Council founding chair and Carol Browner is the chair of the Audubon Society.

Since 2004, Audubon has recognized women in conservation with the organization's prestigious Rachel Carson Award. Rachel Carson Award winners have been among the most distinguished in their fields and again this year Audubon salutes an outstanding group of leaders. This year's honorees were Bette Midler – founder of the New York Restoration Project, Teresa Heinz– one of the nation's leading environmental advocates, Central Park Conservancy Jean Clark, Norma Dana, Marguerite Purnell, Elizabeth Barlow Rogers and the late Phyllis Cerf Wagner.   These women are environmental pioneers and are helping to ensure that future generations can live healthy lives in a sustainable environment.

Audubon's Women in Conservation Program was created for girls and women to discover the world of conservation and connect with the best and brightest women leaders in the environmental movement. The program promotes education on important environmental issues, like climate change, clean air and water, wildlife preservation, and environmental justice. Audubon is interested in connecting girls and young women to the environmental movement by providing a forum for education, information sharing and exchange of ideas.

In addition to the prestigious Rachel Carson Award, the Women in Conservation program also offers a prominent scholarship which will provide young women with opportunities to create their own impact in the environmental world.
