On
February 9, The BCAM Gala at
the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art (LACMA)
celebrated the opening of the Renzo Piano designed,
three-story, Broad Contemporary Art
Museum (BCAM). Located in the center of LACMA's
campus, near the corner of Fairfax and Wilshire Blvd,
BCAM provides Los Angeles with 60,000 sq. ft. of contemporary
art exhibition space thanks to a $60 million donation
from Eli and Edythe Broad.
At this invitation only, black tie Gala, guests were
escorted into a 22,000 square foot “super structure,” built
exclusively for the special night. The inside of the
venue was cloaked from ceiling to floor in walls of
white faux ultra-suede, highlighting the centerpiece
of the room – 12 light installations formed by
giant cubes, also constructed of white faux ultra-suede
that featured cutting-edge iTile technology. The tables
featured floral centerpieces of geometric Zen gardens.
Guests were presented with a surprise performance act
by up-and-coming musician William Joseph,
who descended from the ceiling on a floating stage,
performing Led Zeppelin's “Kashmir,” in
addition to a special performance by Grammy and Academy
award-winning artist Lionel Richie.
The center floor illuminated in pulsing red plexi,
leading guests to the BCAM building after the dramatic
entertainment reveal with one entire wall of the super
structure collapsing to reveal the highly-anticipated
BCAM building.
In addition to this spectacular display, guests were
also treated to a three-course dinner prepared by Wolfgang
Puck, accompanied by Newton Vineyard wines. The menu
was carefully selected for this memorable occasion,
starting with a trio of Wolfgang Puck Signature Salads,
followed by a main course of Roasted Waygu Chateau
Briand with Short Rib-Spinach Spaetzle Hash, Broccolini,
Crispy Vidalia Onions, and Roasted Sweet Pepper-Tomato
Fondue. All was followed by a special dessert created
by Wolfgang Puck in honor of the Opening of BCAM.
Undoubtedly the highlight of the evening, the unveiling
of the initial installation included some 200 works
from renowned post-war artists such as John
Baldessari, Richard Serra, Jeff
Koons, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg,
Ed Ruscha, Cy Twombly, Ellsworth Kelly, Cindy Sherman and Roy Lichtenstein.
Guests included: Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes,
Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Richie, Joel Madden, Owen Wilson,
Christina Aguilera, Edward Norton, Rita Wilson, Steve
Martin, Lionel Richie, Dennis Hopper, Anjelica Huston,
