At the third annual Bella and Bella Fella Awards Program, held on April 5, 2011 at the rooftop terrace of Scholastic in Manhattan, Hunter College President Jennifer J. Raab was awarded the Bella Award in memory of Hunter alumna Bella Abzug ('42). Abzug's daughter, Liz Abzug, presented Raab with her award. Hunter Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students Eija Ayravainen received the Wise Woman Award. Harold Holzer, one of the country's leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era, was presented the Bella Fella Award by singer/composer Lesley Gore. Holzer had served as Congresswoman Abzug's press secretary in the 1970s. Arts activist Layla Love received the Andrea "Chutzpah" Young Woman Leadership Award.
The Bella Abzug Leadership Institute (BALI) sponsored the event. BALI utilizes the signature leadership skills of the late New York Congresswoman Bella S. Abzug to mentor and train high school and college age women in the development of confidence and skills needed to become effective, dynamic and visionary leaders as well as active and creative participants in civic, political, corporate and community life.
