The
Children's Cancer & Blood Foundation (CCBF) hosted its
annual “Breakthrough Ball” fundraising gala on Tuesday,
October 28, 2008, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The
Foundation raised over $1.5 million for treatment and research into
the causes of childhood cancers and blood diseases. Proceeds
from this benefit will ensure that the CCBF continues its exceptional
mission to provide the very best up-to-date treatments for young
people, as well as engage in breakthrough research that will lead
to improved care and cures.
Charles Grodin served as master of ceremonies, and NFL great Tiki
Barber, last year's honoree, was this year's special
guest. The 2008 Breakthrough Spirit Award was
given toartist, musician and producer, Swizz Beatz; actor/activist
Steve Guttenberg; major league star and Yankee analyst Al Leiter;
and Laureen Kelley, founder, Save One Life, Inc.
A new song written and produced by Beatz, “One Day,” an
inspirational piece dedicated to the children who are being treated
for cancer and blood diseases, was introduced with a heartwarming
video of Beatz's visit to the clinic and the time he spent
with the children. Swizz intends to release the song commercially
with all the proceeds going to the Children's Cancer & Blood
Foundation.
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings provided entertainment. Famed
art auction expert, Simone dePury, conducted a live auction that
included beautiful DiModolo custom jewelry, a five hour Bombardier
Skyjet package, a Caribbean vacation and much more.
The evening also featured Lou Christie, the 60's star, who
sang his hit "Lightning Strikes" with an accompanying
skit with Kim Garfunkel, wife of Art Garfunkel. Art Garfunkel
was also on hand.
The CCBF supports the pioneering and lifesaving work of the Division
of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital
Weill/Cornell Medical Center. Each year we treat thousands
of children with an array of pediatric diseases from cancers
to sickle cell to HIV/AIDS.
