The Citizens Committee for New York City and a crowd of 650 New Yorkers who cherish the vibrancy of their city's neighborhoods paid tribute on February 5, at the annual “New Yorker for New York City” gala, to nine individuals who have made New York's communities better, safer and more beautiful.

Honored at the Waldorf-Astoria dinner were Martina Arroyo, Jonathan Capehart, Pete Hamill, Karen and Irwin Redlender, M.D., Lisa Schiff, and Nabila and Ahsanullah “Bobby” Kahn of the Coney Island Project. A special new Cornell Family Scholarship was launched and awarded to Latonia Shakira Edwards, a senior at Dewitt Clinton High School in The Bronx.

The black-tie gala raised more than $1 million for projects across the city in which Citizens Committee for New York City will mobilize New Yorkers to improve their neighborhoods and help them build strong community volunteer groups.

The evening opened with welcoming remarks by Citizens Committee for New York City Chairman Henry Cornell, and was presided over by Peter H. Kostmayer, the organization's president. A glittering array of dignitaries including former Mayor David Dinkins and musician Wynton Marsalis were among the award presenters. Subway hero Wesley Autrey, Sr was recognized as a special guest.
