| Danish
American Society Man of the Year Gala |
The
Danish American Society honored Ambassador John L. Loeb,
Jr., former Ambassador to Denmark, as 2005 Man of the
Year, on November 11, in
New York City, at a Gala Dinner at the Cipriani Rainbow
Room at Rockefeller Center.
Known internationally as a connoisseur of the arts,
Ambassador Loeb, while serving as the American Ambassador
to the Kingdom of Denmark during the years 1981-1983,
began collecting Danish art and has subsequently assembled
the most comprehensive collection of 19th century Danish
art outside Denmark. Continuing a long family tradition
of believing that art should be viewed by a broad public
Ambassador Loeb has made the collection available to
the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT. and to the Frances
Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College, in Poughkeepsie,
NY.
Financier, philanthropist, and diplomat, Ambassador
Loeb, a prominent descendant of both the Loeb and Lehman
banking families can trace his family ties in America,
back to the late 17th century, Ambassador Loeb is a
graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Business
School. Ambassador Loeb served in the United States
Air Force from 1954 until 1956 rising to the rank of
First Lieutenant. He subsequently became a partner in
the investment-banking firm, Loeb, Rhoades and Company.
In 1979 he founded his own independent investment and
counseling firm, which he currently manages.
Previous DAS honorees included, Frank Andersen, Crown
Prince Frederik, Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, Danish Minister
of Foreign Affairs, Maersk Mc-kinney Moller, Peter Martins,
Werner Valeur Jensen and the Danish Freedom Fighters.
Only two other Americans, Walter Cronkite and John Portman
have been honored, previously.
