The 9th annual Fountain House Symposium and Luncheon took place at The Pierre in New York City on April 30, 2012 and raised over one million dollars. More than 500 guests were on hand for the event, titled “The Changing Mind: Youth and Neuroplasticity.”The Fountain House Humanitarian Award was presented to Mark Vonnegut, MD – pediatrician, author and educator – who has lived with mental illness throughout his adult life.
This yearly event was founded to advance community knowledge about mental illness and to reduce the associated stigma. Funds raised support the programs of Fountain House, one of the world’s leading mental health models, providing employment, education, and housing opportunities to people living with serious mental illness. This successful model has been replicated by hundreds of Fountain House programs serving tens of thousands of people worldwide.
The Symposiumfeatured a panel discussion geared to a lay audience about recent findings indicating that important regions of the human brain have the ability to develop and change, at least into a person’s twenties; this ability is termed neuroplasticity, and these findings hold possibilities for preventing or arresting mental disorders. The panelists, leaders in mental health research, treatment, and public policy, were: Joseph T. Coyle, MD, Eben S. Draper Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Harvard Medical School; Brian D’Onofrio, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Indiana University; and Elyn Saks, JD, PhD, Orrin B. Evans Professor of Law, Psychology, and Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences, University of Southern California Gould School of Law. Prof. Saks chronicled her struggle with schizophrenia in the memoir The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness. Consuelo Mack, managing editor and anchor of “Consuelo Mack WealthTrack,” served as Master of Ceremonies.
Dr. Vonnegut, the son of the late author Kurt Vonnegut, experienced his first psychotic break not long after graduating from college. He recovered sufficiently to receive an MD degree from Harvard Medical School, where he is currently an instructor of Pediatrics. Dr. Vonnegut is the author of two memoirs, The Eden Express and Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness Only More So.
