To
mark the Frick Collection’s 75th anniversary in
2010, the museum has created a year-long series of celebrations, programs,
and new offerings, the true kick-off of which was the Diamond Deco Ball
on February 25, 2010. This keenly anticipated event was
the eleventh annual fundraiser hosted by the museum’s Young Fellows. Over
630 people braved a severe snowstorm to attend what has been frequently
heralded by The New York Times as one of the “Most Memorable
Parties of the Year.” $235,000 was raised in support of the Education
Program of The Frick Collection. The evening was sponsored by Tiffany
& Co. and Vera Wang.
The museum turned the clock back seventy-five years for an elegance-infused
art deco soiree, the core of which occurred in the Garden Court and Music
Room, which were added to the residence in 1935 by the celebrated architect
John Russell Pope. Until The Frick Collection opened, it was a private
residence accessed by a privileged few―by appointment only―leaving
the public utterly fascinated with the prospect of finally seeing the
former Frick home and the art it housed. On the occasion of its 1935
debut, critics spoke of this new cultural treasure as a great “legacy
of beauty” and one where the quality of its collections was “unsurpassed
anywhere.” Diamond Deco Ball guests were allowed to wander freely
through the same spell-binding galleries of fine and decorative arts
as did those who attended the museum’s formal reception seventy-five
years ago. Several such rooms, however, had been recently refurbished
to great effect and a warm critical response, among them Pope’s
1935 East Gallery, which was returned last fall to his original color
scheme. In the years following the opening, the collection grew as well,
and these works were also on view throughout the ball. Among these masterpieces
were paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts by artists as Chardin,
Constable, David, Goya, Gainsborough, Greuze, Houdon, de La Tour, Monet,
Piero della Francesca, Ruisdael, and Rembrandt.
Allison Aston, Lydia Fenet, Joann Pailey, Coralie
Charriol Paul, and
