Academy
Award winning actress Dame Helen Mirren received
the 2007 Distinction in Theater Award from
the Geffen Playhouse during its Backstage
at the Geffen Gala on
April 30 at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.
The Fifth Annual star-studded event and reception was
a “behind-the-scenes” peek at
the performing arts through play readings and intimate
storytelling by Dana Delany, Joely
Fisher, Greg Germann, Neil
LaBute, Christine Lahti, David
Mamet, Dick Van Dyke, and Robert
Wuhl. The presentation of Mirren's
award by John Lithgow closed the Gala
on an elegant high note. The evening also recognized
outgoing Board of Directors chairman, Herb Gelfand,
for his extended service and dedication to the Geffen
Playhouse. The fun-filled evening raised more than
$500,000 benefiting the Geffen Playhouse's Education
and Outreach Programs, including a capital gift of $250,000
naming the education program “The Beverly and Herb
Gelfand Bridge to Education.”
