On April 3, The Juilliard
School celebrated its centennial with a black-tie
gala chaired by Cynthia and Dan Lufkin. The
evening was enjoyed by 1,000 guests and raised
more than $5.5 million for the school.
The festivities
began with a cocktail hour that was followed
by a 90 minute “Live
From Lincoln Center” PBS telecast, hosted
by Beverly Sills, from the school's Peter
Jay Sharp Theater. The performance featured
world-famous alumni (John Williams, Renée
Fleming, Kevin Kline, Wynton Marsalis, Itzhak
Perlman and Emanuel Ax) performing with Juilliard's
current outstanding students.
Following
the concert, guests walked across the street
and into a grand ballroom designed by Ron Wendt under
a huge tent erected over the entire plaza in
front of the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. The décor
was a celebration of spring featuring bouquets
of rannuncula, tulips, lilac,
narcissus, hydrangea, roses and anemones on
blue, green and coral tartan patterned taffeta
tablecloths scattered with sprigs of pink sweet
peas.
