Donna
Karan hosted The Kageno Harambee Gala on Monday, November
3rd at the Stephan Weiss Studio in New York City. Karan was joined
by event leadersDrena De Niro, Dr. Paul Farmer, Pamela Fiori, Liya
Kebede and Meryl Streep. This year's event celebrated
Kageno's five years of innovative community development, and
it will benefit the organization's Kenya and Rwanda programs.
Kageno, meaning a “Place of Hope” in a Kenyan dialect,
is a multifaceted community development project that transforms communities
suffering from inhumane poverty into places of opportunity and hope
by improving sanitation, providing basic healthcare, and elevating
living standards by educating and empowering community members through
sustainable programs.
The Kageno Harambee Gala included dinner, entertainment
and a luxury auction with a silent and live component. Xan
Serafin of Christie's was the auctioneer for the evening. The
event also included a performance by The Children's Storefront
School.
Since 2003, Kageno has supported a community development project
on Rusinga Island, Kenya, a community greatly affected by HIV/AIDS,
rural poverty, deforestation and a lack of basic living standards. Kageno
implemented infrastructure such as a drinking water system, an AIDS
testing center, a computer center and latrines. The organization
also started programs such as craft production, nursery school education
and reforestation campaigns.
In January 2007, Kageno launched a new community development project
in Banda, a small remote village in the Nyungwe Forest National Park
in Southwest Rwanda, suffering from land scarcity, lack of sustainable
management of resources, inadequate health services, and insufficient
access to clean water, sanitation and education. In addition
to implementing community development activities, Kageno sought to
include the best practices of natural resource management in order
to benefit the human population and the biodiversity of Nyungwe Forest
National Park.
Kageno Worldwide is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization founded
in 2003. Kageno's mission is to transform communities
suffering from inhumane poverty into places of opportunity and hope
by identifying and delivering actionable programs through its Innovative
Community Centers (ICCs). Kageno targets villages suffering
from impoverishment, AIDS, limited access to education, healthcare
and genocide. Living standards are improved by offering health
services, access to clean water, improved sanitation, job creation
and environmental initiatives. For more information, please
