On
April 19, LA Opera commemorated its 20th Anniversary
Season with a special event - Plácido
Domingo & Friends 20th Anniversary Performance
and Gala at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Music
Center.
The evening began with a star-studded performance
by some of opera's biggest names. General Director
Plácido Domingo starred in
one of his most acclaimed portrayals, the title part
in Act IV from Verdi's Otello. Also
starring in the Otello scene was soprano
Patricia Racette as Desdemona. The evening continued
with the Act II “Party Scene” from Johann
Strauss' Die Fledermaus, which was
conducted by Maestro Domingo and featured surprise
guest performances by Roberto Alagna, Angela Gheorghiu,
Verónica Villarroel, Charles Castronovo, Ruth
Ann Swenson and Mark Delavan.
The festivities concluded
with a black-tie Gala benefit, featuring a sumptuous
dinner and dancing with the artists in the Grand
Hall of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Proceeds
support LA Opera and its community programs.
