The opening of LA Opera's 2006/07 season was celebrated with a Gala Weekend of music, dining and dancing. General Director Plácido Domingo welcomed Music Director James Conlon, who made his long-awaited debut conducting the first two offerings - Verdi's
La Traviata and Don Carlo – September 9 and 10 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Highlighting the performances were an array of glamorous events, which were attended by over 600 guests from the arts and entertainment community. The Gala Weekend Celebration, underwritten by Mr. and Mrs. Milan Panic, was chaired by Mary Hayley with honorary chairman Richard Seaver.
LA Opera launched its Gala Weekend festivities September 9 with an all-star performance of La Traviata. Internationally acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming made her Company operatic debut as Verdi's tragic heroine Violetta Valéry. Joining her were the electrifying Mexican tenor
Rolando Villazón, who returned as Alfredo, the role in which he made his Company debut in 2001. The black-tie evening continued with a lavish post-performance Gala with the artists on the Music Center Plaza where guests enjoyed dancing and an al fresco seated feast.
On September 10, a Celebratory Luncheon on the Music Center Plaza preceded the premiere of a new production of Don Carlo starring Annalisa Raspagliosi, Dolora Zajick, Salvatore Licitra, Rolando Villazón and Ferruccio Furlanetto. Following the performance, the Gala Weekend culminated with a Finale Celebration with the artists in the Grand Hall of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
