Esa-Pekka
Salonen launched his 15th season as Music
Director of the Los
Angeles Philharmonic with the 2006/2007 season's
sold-out opening night
concert followed by a gala attended by more than 600
guests on
September 28 at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The black-tie
post-performance
party, which benefit the Musicians Pension Fund and
the Philharmonic's music
education programs, was held just outside the iconic
concert hall in an
elegantly decorated tented area open to the city lights
and starry skies
above Grand Avenue.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic performance featured music
with a whimsical
flavor by Manuel de Falla and Maurice Ravel. Opening
and closing the concert
were two of Ravel's masterworks: Mother Goose Suite and
the rousing Bolero.
The centerpiece of the evening's performance was Manuel
de Falla's Master
Peter's Puppet Show, enacted by life-sized puppets,
directed and designed by
puppeteer Basil Twist.
The gala committee
included co-chairs Joan and John
Hotchkis and Margaret
and Jerrold Eberhardt, plus committee members Lynn Booth, Mary
Hayley,
Pamela Hoefflin, Ellen Lipson, Carolyn
Powers, Carla Sands, Elizabeth
Segerstrom, and Alyce de R. Williamson.
