Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) continued its tradition
of celebrating visionaries by honoring New York Governor Eliot
Spitzer, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine,
internationally renowned musician Björk,
Academy Award-winning director Michel Gondry and
World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein with
his wife Klara at its spring benefit
The Downtown Dinner on May 3 at 7 World Trade Center. More
than 600 business leaders, artists, actors, directors
and political figures, including Natalie Portman, Jeff
Koons, David Byrne, Suzanne
Vega and Cindy Sherman attended
the event.
The Downtown Dinner provides critical support for
the Council's acclaimed artist-residency program, Workspace,
regarded as the largest and most prestigious in the
city, attracting more than 1,000 applicants for 30
spaces. This year, The Downtown Dinner raised
1.23 million dollars.
Throughout the evening, guests were treated to musical
performances, art installations, and interactive happenings. The
Downtown Dinner showcased some of New York City's
most innovative culture by artists affiliated with the
Council—including Shoplifter's wall
installation featuring braided hair and a life-size horse
sculpture, modern puppeteer Eric Sanko,
the site-specific Guerilla Dance Team,
and a commissioned short film by The Neistat
Brothers.
