Opera of Chicago's Wine Auction 2006
On February 24, Lyric Opera of Chicago's Wine
Auction 2006 raised an unprecedented $1,022,000 in net
proceeds. The evening began with silent-auction bidding
in the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Grand Foyer and culminated
with spirited live-auction bidding on the mainstage
of the Ardis Krainik Theatre in the historic Civic Opera
House. More than 420 guests attended the elegant fundraiser
hosted by the Women's Board of Lyric Opera of
Chicago. For the first time, the entire catalogue was
posted online in advance of the auction, with 130 lots
offered exclusively online. Bids were posted from all
over the U.S. and as far away as Mexico, Hong Kong,
and Japan.
This was the eighth wine auction organized by the Women's
Board of Lyric Opera of Chicago since 1988. Mrs. Christopher
C. Milliken served as chairman and Mrs. Paul W. Oliver,
Jr. served as vice chairman of Wine Auction 2006. Mrs.
W. James Farrell is president of the Women's Board,
and served as public relations & marketing co-chairman.
Their Royal Highnesses Prince and Princess Robert of
Luxembourg were honored guests. Prince Robert is vice
president and managing director, Domaine Clarence Dillon,
producer of Châteaux Haut-Brion and La Mission
Haut-Brion Bordeaux.
Lyric Opera's wine auctions have now netted more
than $4 million since 1988. The proceeds go directly
to Lyric's annual campaign, which supports the
world-renowned opera company's activities.
