Fantastic
feathered masks, giant scarlet lampshades, zebra-print
table linens, citrus-filled vases topped with palm
fronds, and sheer tropical curtains set the scene
for “Carnivale!”, the 23rd annual Fantasy
of the Opera Gala benefit hosted
by Lyric Opera of Chicago's Guild
Board of Directors at the Civic Opera House on February
3.
Early in the evening, an array of tasty morsels
prepared by some of Chicago's top chefs enticed
the capacity crowd of 610 ticket-holders for the
sold-out fundraiser. Many enjoyed mojitos, caipirinhas, and
other exotic beverages garnished with illuminated
ice-cubes while they perused the silent-auction tables
and made bids. Many also enjoyed wearing the brilliant-colored
and whimsically shaped masks that adorned tabletops
throughout the opera house.
The Fantasy Cabaret showcased the non-operatic musical
talents of Lyric artists Sir Thomas Allen, Isabel
Bayrakdarian, David Cangelosi, Anna
Christy, Elizabeth DeShong, Nathan
Gunn, Patricia Racette,
and Dale Travis, who sang selections
by Berlin, Bernstein, Gershwin, Flanders & Swann,
Lerner & Lowe, Mercer & Arlen, and Sheer.
Lyric's music director, Sir Andrew
Davis, was master of ceremonies, and pianist Craig
Terry accompanied the singers. A buffet
dinner and dancing followed.
The evening raised a record-breaking
$550,000. James A. Staple and Linda Curtis
O'Bannon, M.D. served as event
co-chairmen.
