On
October 26, 2009 the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) presented
the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal to two exceptional New Yorkers:
Peter L. Malkin and Robert A. M. Stern. The medals were presented by
Rocco Landesman. The presentation and gala dinner took place at the New
York Public Library, one of the city’s most beautiful works of
Beaux-Arts architecture.
The Onassis Medal, the Municipal Art Society’s
highest honor, is presented each year to individuals whose work and deeds
have made an outstanding contribution to the City of New York. It is
named for former MAS board member Jacqueline Kennedy
Onassis in honor
of her tireless efforts to preserve and protect New York’s great
architecture. In the late 1970s, Mrs. Onassis led the Municipal Art Society’s
successful fight to uphold the New York City Landmarks Law and save one
of New York’s most magnificent public spaces: Grand Central Terminal.
Honorary chairs were Caroline Kennedy and Vincent
Scully. Co-chairs were
David M. Childs, Philip K. Howard, Frederick Iseman,
Tony Kiser, Janet C. Ross, Stephen M. Ross, Jerry I. Speyer, and Wade
F.B. Thompson.
