MacDowell chairman Robert MacNeil and Thomas P. Putnam, chairman of the
MacDowell Centennial Steering Committee.

The MacDowell Colony the first and leading artist residency program in the United States — launched a yearlong celebration of its Centennial with its annual gala on December 4, in New York City.

This year's gala program was the artist-created MacDowell Celebrates!  Guests enjoyed the humorous work of Tony-nominated writer, actress, and MacDowell Fellow Lisa Kron; selections from the Broadway musical Grey Gardens, created by MacDowell Fellows Scott Frankel, Michael Korie, and Doug Wright; a performance by two members of the Martha Graham Dance Company in honor of MacDowell Fellow Aaron Copland, accompanied by readings by Anne Jackson and Eli Wallach; and a selection from Third, by late playwright, MacDowell Fellow, and board member Wendy Wasserstein, performed by Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, and introduced by Paul Rudnick and MacDowell Fellow Steve Lawson.

Robert MacNeil, author, cultural commentator, and MacDowell chairman, served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.  Performance artist Lucy Sexton was the program director.  Ruth M. Feder and Helen S. Tucker were Benefit chairmen. Honorary Chairmen were Thomas and Barbara Putnam and Rosamond Putnam.  Honorary Artist chairmen were Michael Chabon, Osvaldo Golijov, and Ayelet Waldman.
