The New York State Theater Promenade was the setting for the glamorous Spring
Gala.
|
New
York City Ballet's Spring Gala,
held on Tuesday, April 29, opened the season long Jerome Robbins
Celebration, in honor of the 90th Anniversary of his birth. Stars
from both ballet and Broadway turned out to celebrate choreographer Jerome
Robbins and his extraordinary contributions to the cultural
life of New York City and the world.
The program featured Circus Polka, Robbins' charming
pièce d'occasion featuring 48 students from the School
of American Ballet; The Four Seasons, his extravagant romp
through the music of Verdi; and West Side Story Suite, his
thrilling distillation of the dance sequences from the Broadway musical.
Following this exciting program, guests enjoyed an elegant black-tie
Supper Ball on the Promenade and Terrace of the New York State Theater. Attended
by over 850 guests, the Spring Gala raised over $2.2 million, making
it the most successful fundraising event in NYCB history.
Mica Ertegün was honorary chairman. Charlotte
Moss and Barry S. Friedberg, and Veronique and Robert
Pittman served as Gala chairmen. Richard
D. Beckman of Gala sponsor Condé Nast Media Group
was corporate chairman, and Eric Nederlander was
Gala vice chairman.
