On
November 18, New York City Opera's Family
Benefit took place at the New York State Theater.
City Opera's Family Benefit offers a great opportunity
to introduce children to the wonderful world
of opera. This year's event was based around
a matinee performance of Jules Massenet's enchanting Cendrillion (Cinderella).
Creative team Renaud Doucet and Andre Barbe Massenet
transport the classic fairytale to a 1950s American
Graffiti setting: Cinderella wears a neon-lit
glass slipper, she and Prince Charming go on
a date to a drive-in movie theater, and wishes
are granted by a Lucille Ball-like fairy godmother.
The matinee performance was followed by
a fun-filled party for both the young and young
at heart. A buffet lunch was accompanied by face-painting,
dancing, a make-your-own sundae bar, and much
much more.
All proceeds from the Family Benefit support
New York City Opera's award-winning Education
Programs serving over 20,000 New York City public
school students each year.
