On
March 5, New York City Opera's Spring
Gala featured a spectacular new production
of Henry Purcell's King Arthur, directed
by Mark Morris and featured the Mark
Morris Dance Group. The worlds of music, dance
and fashion fuse in this witty work with costumes by Isaac
Mizrahi, sets by Adrianne Lobel and
lighting by James F. Ingalls. The
performance was followed by a black-tie gala celebration
on the Grand Promenade of the New York State Theater
at Lincoln Center.
Mark Morris and Isaac Mizrahi served
as honorary chairs. Olivia and Adam
Flatto, Patricia and Jesse
R. Lovejoy, and Constance J. Milstein served
as Gala chairs.
City Opera was pleased to honor Edmée
de M. Firth on this special evening. Edmée
founded New York City Opera's General Director's
Council in 1997 as a vehicle to support Paul Kellogg's
new vision for the company and to create a new, exciting,
opera-loving group in the city. Over the course of
the last 10 years, Edmée has built the Council
into the intellectual and social heart of City Opera.
Now, as City Opera plans for a new future under the
leadership of Gerard Mortier, they
thank Edmée for creating the foundation on
which they will build an exciting new circle to support
this next chapter in City Opera's history.
All proceeds from the Spring Gala support City Opera's
mission to produce innovative productions of new and
classic work, reach a wide audience with affordable
ticket prices, and bring music into the lives of thousands
of students each year through its acclaimed education
programs in the New York City public schools. Over
$1 million was raised at City Opera's Spring
Gala and 600 guests attended.
