More than 600 people from 19 countries gathered in support of hospice and palliative care at The Art of Caring National Hospice Gala in Washington, DC on April 7.   In addition to dinner, dancing and a silent auction, the evening included the National Hospice Foundation's annual leadership awards.

The Most Reverend D. M. Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus, was honored with the Humanitarian Leadership Award in appreciation of extraordinary dedication working on behalf of the needs of society's most vulnerable populations. The Honorable Richard Holbrooke, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, received the Global Vision Award.  In his current role as President and CEO of the Global Business Coalition, the business alliance against HIV/AIDS, Ambassador Holbrooke has leveraged resources to improve care for people living with the disease in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. Virginia Brown, of the National Hospice Regatta Alliance and founder of the Hospice Cup, was presented with the Philanthropic Inspiration Award for her unparalleled commitment to creating ongoing support for hospice in a unique way.  The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, recipient of the Healthcare Architect Award, was honored for its ongoing support and funding which has made significant impact in the delivery and understanding of end-of-life care in the country.

A special Hospice Champion Award was also presented to Art Buchwald, American humorist and Pulitzer Prize winning syndicated columnist.  Buchwald and his family were recognized for recent interviews and articles telling the story of his current hospice experience at the Washington Home and Hospice.  His in-depth and entertaining anecdotes about the realities of his care have enhanced hospice awareness nationwide.

Dr. Diane E. Meier, director, Center to Advance Palliative Care and NHF president Dr. J. Donald Schumacher present the Healthcare Architect Award to Peter Goodwin, accepting on behalf of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.


Chair-elect James R. Borynack of Wally Findlay Galleries International welcomes guests on behalf of the National Hospice Foundation.


Dr. Joseph O'Neill, president & CEO, The Immune Response Corporation presents the Humanitarian Leadership Award to the Reverend Mpho Tutu, accepting on behalf of her father, The Most Reverend D.M. Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus.


Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases presents the Global Vision Award to former Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, president & CEO, Global Business Council on HIV/AIDS.
