In
the spirit of the South Florida Science Museum's “Diamond
Constellation Ball” guests stepped out in their most glittering
gowns and jewels on February 28, 2009 at The Breakers Palm Beach. Honorary
chairs Kathryn C. Vecellio and Sydelle Meyer joined chairs Julie Rudolph,
Karen Swanson and Allison Rogers Haft to welcome over 160 guests for
the gala's 22nd annual event. In early returns, it is anticipated
that the Museum more than hit its projections for the event, and more
than $300,000 will go directly to support programs for the community.
The evening began with cocktails and a silent auction of a wide array
of enticing items, including an exclusive ladies luncheon for sixteen
at Nieman Marcus, dazzling Gevril men's and ladies watches, a one-year
membership to the Palm Beach Yacht Club, and gold gilded antique dinnerware
from Palm Beach's Petit Trianon. Tim Luke of “Cash in
the Attic” and “Antiques Roadshow” was on-hand to admire
the provenance of the early 20th century dishes and other donated items
on display throughout The Breaker's Gold Room.
The gala's festivities continued in the Mediterranean Ball Room
where guests bid on a gorgeous lizard skin bag from Worth Avenue's
Daniella Ortiz, and a stunning diamond and amethyst pendant donated by
Rosenberg Diamonds and Co. of Boca Raton during a live auction. The
evening's cash call raised additional funds for science education.
The Museum's new CEO, Mary Sellers welcomed guests and announced
the extension of the blockbuster exhibition, the Max Planck Science Tunnel
presented by Bank of America, through May 3rd, 2009.
Special guests and dignitaries attending the event included WPTV's
Tania Rogers, Senator David Aronberg, Mayor Lois Frankel and Sheriff
Ric Bradshaw. Other guests included Frances Fisher and Jeffrey Fisher,
Dr. and Mrs. Harry Orf, Mia Matthews and Bob Matthews, Denise Meyer and
Bill Meyer, and Judy Grubman and Mark Sullivan.
