by floral designer Bill Tansey.

On
March 12, The Strang Cancer Prevention Center held
its Garden of Hope gala at New York City's Metropolitan
Club. The event raised $262,000 with $200,000 in additional
related gifts to allow the over 70-year-old institution
to continue its work dedicated to creating world without
cancer through early detection, research and education.
Dr. Michael Osborne, the President
of Strang, was the evening's honoree. Also honored
were Matilda Cuomo who received the
Dr. Elise Strang L'Esperance Leadership Award
and Linda Leong who received the Volunteer
Recognition Award.
Iris Cantor served as honorary chair.
The event's co-chairs were Dana Hammond
Stübgen and Sharon Bush. Famed interior designer Mario Buatta served
as the evening's Master of Ceremonies and auctioneer.
The evening's entertainment was provided by singer Rufus
Wainwright, who was accompanied at the piano
by his mother Kate McGarrigle. The
evening was sponsored by Lehman Brothers' Todd
Rubsamen.
For more than 70 years, Strang physicians and scientists
have dedicated themselves to preventing cancer through
early detection, research and education. As the oldest
dedicated U.S. cancer prevention institute, Strang has
discovered, developed and distributed globally some of
today's most effective cancer prevention tools,
including the Pap test for cervical cancer and sigmoidoscopy
for colon cancer. Strang research aims to diagnose and
treat cancer in the early stages- before the need for
surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. As part of its continuing
commitment to public health, Strang has launched Healthy
Children Healthy Futures, an innovative child health
initiative designed to reduce the high incidence of health
and social risk factors affecting urban school children
and their families.
