Washington
National Opera celebrated 50 years of producing
great opera in the nation's capital at The
Golden Gala, on March 19 in the Opera
House of the John F. Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts. The event was chaired
by WNO trustee The Honorable Selwa “Lucky” Roosevelt.
General
Director Plácido
Domingo was joined by some of opera's
biggest stars including Carlos Álvarez, Juan Diego Flórez, Elizabeth
Futral, Paul Groves, Alan Held,
Anja Kampe, John Matz, Anna Netrebko, Samuel Ramey and
the violinist Vadim Repin.
The
evening also featured the world premiere
performance by Plácido Domingo, Kristin
Chenoweth and Trevor Scheunemann of a delightful opera spoof The
Audition by Broadway legends Marvin Hamlisch and Sheldon Harnick. Special
guests for the opera spoof include three justices of the Supreme Court: Justice
Stephen Breyer, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and Justice Antonin Scalia.
