The Whitney
Museum of American Art honored American
artist Chuck Close at the 2007 Whitney
Gala and Studio Party on October 22. Partnering
with the Whitney for the first time, Akris,
the luxury fashion house, sponsored the Gala and
Studio Party, this year themed “Shades of Gray.” Melva
Bucksbaum, Amy Phelan, Meryl Streep and Don
Gummer, and Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin
Bacon served as co-chairs for the Gala Dinner. Following
dinner, Lisa Anastos, Lauren Bush, Martin
Dawson, Amanda Hearst, Terence Koh, Holly Newman
Kroft, Dalia Oberlander, and Taryn
Simon served as co-chairs for the Studio
Party, which was hosted by the Whitney's newest
patron group, the Artists Council, founded by Lisa
Anastos and Holly Newman Kroft in the spring of 2007.
The evening's black-tie celebration raised more
than $2.4 million as one of the Whitney's most
successful fundraising events. It began with a cocktail
reception for 475 guests in the lobby and Sculpture
Court, followed by a seated-dinner in the fourth-floor
Emily Fisher Landau Galleries, where renowned pianist Bruce
Levingston performed Philip Glass's A
Musical Portrait of Chuck Close.
Highlighting the theme of “Shades of Gray” during
the Gala dinner were Close's larger-than-life
tapestry portraits depicting friends and well-known
artists, including soprano Renée Fleming,
composer Philip Glass, and artists Cindy
Sherman, Lorna Simpson and Kiki Smith,
among others. The tapestries, which were shown together
as a set for the first time, included one still-life
portrait of a sunflower. The décor echoed this
work through low centerpieces of sunflowers surrounded
by candles on the square tables' mirrored centers.
At the Studio Party, more than 500 guests danced to DJ
Cassidy in the Museum's lower level and tented
Sculpture Court, under Close's tapestry portraits
of model Kate Moss and composer Philip
Glass.
