More
than $900,000 was raised for amfAR, The
Foundation for AIDS Research, on January
31 at the annual New York Gala at Cipriani 42nd
Street in New York City. Julian Schnabel,
acclaimed artist and film maker, Carine
Roitfeld, editor in chief of French Vogue,
and Bobby Shriver, founder of
the (Product)RED campaign, were honored at the
event for their vital and distinctive contributions
to the global struggle against AIDS.
The evening opened with welcoming remarks by amfAR
chairman Kenneth Cole. In addition
to Cole and several members of amfAR's board
of trustees, celebrities who came out to support
the evening included Natasha Bedingfield,
Harry Belafonte, Sandy Brant, Joy Bryant, Ed Burns,
Lauren Bush, Dick Cavett, Roberto Cavalli, Alba
Clemente, Lily Donaldson, Ahn Duong, Lapo Elkann,
Jennifer Esposito, Ben Foster, Nina Garcia, Ben
Gazzara, Harry Hamlin, Cheyenne Jackson, Genevieve
Jones, Liya Kebede, Doutzen Kroes, David Lauren,
Kate Mara, Maxwell, McG, Jennifer Missoni, Margherita
Missoni, The MisShapes (Geordon Nicol, Leigh Lezark,
Greg K), Miss Universe Riyo Mori, Tinsley Mortimer,
Stavros Niarchos, Ashley Olsen, Mark Ronson, Julia
Restoin Roitfeld, Theodora Richards, Natasha Richardson,
Lisa Rinna, Maggie Rizer, Georgianna Robertson,
Zuleikha Robinson, Charlotte Ronson, Anja Rubik,
Molly Simms, Ingrid Sischy, Lara Stone, Christy
Turlington, Natalia Vodianova, Erin Wasson, Veronica
Webb, Anna Wintour, Alicia Witt, and Rachel
Zoe.
The event, which raised funds for amfAR's
HIV/AIDS research programs, featured a special
performance by Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Barry
Manilow. The evening included the premiere
of a short film about amfAR's history and
accomplishments, introduced by Tony Award-winning
actress Natasha Richardson, a
member of amfAR's board of trustees.
Schnabel, Roitfeld, and Shriver each received
amfAR's Award of Courage for outstanding
leadership and distinguished service in furthering
amfAR's mission and for playing a vital role
in increasing AIDS awareness and accelerating the
pace of HIV/AIDS research. Award presentations
to these individuals were made by Lou Reed,
Marc Jacobs, and Trey Laird respectively. Christy
Turlington joined Bobby Shriver on stage
as he accepted his award.
